97% of contractors can't see their own assets
Big contractors are deploying autonomous robots. Here's what that actually means, and doesn't mean, for a $3M to $25M shop right now.
The headlines this week were full of autonomous robots on construction sites. Before you click away or start budgeting, it's worth reading past the press release.
What happened
McLaren Construction, a UK contractor, announced a partnership with FieldAI to deploy what they're calling general-purpose autonomous robots across their sites. FieldAI's pitch is physical AI, robots that can take on a growing list of tasks over time, layering new capabilities onto the same hardware. Around the same time, Laing O'Rourke announced it's expanding its offsite manufacturing facility, part of what they call their Centre of Excellence for Modern Construction. More automated fabrication, more digital production, more work pulled off the open site and into a controlled environment.
Separately, a survey from AlignOps and Construction Dive found that roughly 97% of contractors don't have real-time visibility into their tools, materials, and equipment, and most don't realize how much that's costing them.
Those are three different stories. The first two are getting all the attention. The third one is the one that actually applies to most of you.
Why it matters for your shop
McLaren and Laing O'Rourke are large UK contractors with the capital, the site scale, and the internal engineering capacity to absorb robotic deployments. Partnering with a physical AI company, standing up an offsite manufacturing campus, these are long plays that take years and tens of millions to get right. They are not a roadmap for a $15M residential contractor or a $60M civil shop.
That doesn't mean none of this is relevant. What Laing O'Rourke is actually doing, pulling repetitive work off variable job sites and into a more controlled, systematized environment, is a principle that applies at any scale. You may not have an offsite fab facility, but you can ask the same question: which parts of your operation are being done differently on every project because no one ever wrote it down?
The asset visibility number is the one I keep coming back to. 97% is almost everyone. And the problem isn't that contractors are lazy, it's that tracking tools and equipment across multiple sites, crews, and subs is genuinely hard without a system. People know roughly where things are until they don't. Then a guy spends three hours driving to a yard to find a piece of equipment that's actually on the other side of town.
This is exactly the kind of problem that doesn't feel urgent until it compounds. It's also the kind of problem you can actually do something about this week, without a robot.
The honest read: autonomous robots on construction sites are real and getting better. They're also, for most of you, a 2030 conversation. The unsexy stuff, knowing where your equipment is, building SOPs your crews actually follow, getting your job cost data out of someone's head and into a system, that's the work that moves the needle now. I've been in construction for 12 years. The companies that get the basics right are still the ones that outperform.
One thing to try this week
Pick one piece of equipment or one category of tools that regularly goes missing or sits idle on the wrong site. Spend 30 minutes this week building a simple check-in / check-out log, a shared Notion table or even a Google Sheet works fine. Add five fields: item, current location, assigned crew, date out, expected return. Send it to your PM or field super and ask them to populate it for that one category. Don't try to solve everything at once. Just make one thing visible. That's how the habit starts.
